Jack Kirby (3 points)

 I decided to read the "New Gods" by Jack Kirby because this is a universe and the characters I didn't know before. 

It is hard to say something new about the art of Jack Kirby's work. It is just brilliant—godlike looking characters. The line art looks just right with the line width and the amount of it in the image. By looking at this art, you may be sure that the artist who drew it had an excellent line control. The colors are very bright, but they all work together perfectly. It is okay for the ground to become blue and for the sky to become red. It will still read as ground and the sky. And I like this simplicity in colors. I think it brings more creativity to art. 

But not also art is excellent here. I really enjoyed the universe and characters that Kirby creates. The world seems complicated, significant, and yet understandable. The good old fight between good and evil is now takes here in planetary masses. 

The most fantastic thing is the main character. I was amazed by how much deeper he is then the usual superheroes. 

He has the outer conflict and inner conflict about himself.

He is a fighter for the good planet but is a son of the evil Apokalipce planet's ruler. And the primary fight goes inside himself. He should continuously control his powers. I think that this hero's adventures are much more interesting to watch. 

Then I decided to read the opposite thing by Kirby and his colleague  - "The young Romance."

First of all, it is funny how Kirby's style, I think, just does not work with drawing women. They look either too old or just like pretty men. His style is too harsh and muscular for such a topic. For the story, I can't say anything unique about it. I think it was nice for girls back then, but seeing how a girl tries to make and aunt's lover fall in love with her is just not interesting. 

I also watched Kirby's storyboards, and this is interesting to see how easily the comics can be transformed into the storyboard because they are basically the same thing. Storyboards have more moments to moment elements in it. 

Overall, I just was convinced that Kirby was a great man for the comics' starting era. It is easy to fall in love with his iconic characters and so in comic books.

 "The Arrival" by Shaun Tan very impressed me!  First of all, I have never read s full comic book story without words. I thought it would be very unusual for me, but it was an excellent decision for the new place's atmosphere where you don't know anything or anyone. Even a language for you is unknown. So the fact that this comic had no words significantly helped me understand the main character's feelings.  As an international student, I am very aware of everything the hero of the book was experiencing. The memories of a home-place by some details or fragments. The painful family goodbye. The anxiety of the passport control on the border. Even finding a place to live and settle down in the new and exotic for your location.  It is fascinating how well the artist conveyed all the stress and the excitement of moving to a new place into art.  The gray scale with brown tins is perfect for this type of story, making you feel uncomfy but interested. OSAMU TEZUKA, Buddha 1,2 - (9 points)

I read three volumes from Osamu Tezuka about Buddha. I knew about this artist and his style, how he loved animation and was so highly inspired by Walt Disney.  But I never read his works, but I also knew what manga is and what I can expect. I expected a cluttered art with many details, many dialogs, and just overall beautiful but slow reading.  Instead, I was amazed by what I got. His manga is incredibly appealing, straightforward, and just fun.  I was feeling like I am watching a Disney animation movie.  I can easily see the influence the author got from Walt. All lines are soft and round. Eyes are big and round. And it is incredible how Osamu draws action scenes. They are so clear and fast. He uses many secondary lines and adds extra limbs to his characters when they are running or doing something fast.  This method is often used in animation.  Also, I was surprised how clear, clean, and simple his paneling style is. Contemporary literature (12 points)

For this week, I read "Fun Home" and "Asterious Polyp." With "Fun Home," I believe it is an excellent story with some fantastic art. I love how simple and yet expressive it is. The artist uses just the black inks and the blue marker. And this color choice and style makes excellent sense for the story. The story itself is pretty heavy and a bit depressing for me. Even though I am not a fan of such stories, I think it is important to read such stories, primarily autobiographical. It is vital to find out different people's experiences about their life and feelings. That way, we can understand the world better. The story of Asterious Polyp left me with more feeling than the first one. Even though it is too biographical and a bit sad. But I fell in love with the art style of this comic.
